Whether we like it or not, in our sector, a high turnover of jobs is common. Many developers take on projects and after a few months they end up changing for something more interesting. 🙃
If you’ve been in a job for a while and you’re not sure if it’s time for a change, here are a series of indicators that you should consider. Because sometimes we tend to overstretch what we don’t like: out of fear, uncertainty, or because we’ve got used to it.
If you match several of these indicators, it’s more than likely that it’s time for your change. #JustSaying
You are no longer motivated by what you do
Motivation is a basic element in every job. In the specific case of a developer, belonging to a consistent project, that grows and evolves, is essential to maintain motivation.
Let’s face it: sometimes that great project starts off on a high note and then turns into a huge drama. And you don’t feel motivated to start the working week, attend meetings, make demands on yourself and work in general.
Without a doubt, this is a huge red flag: if you don’t feel like doing your job every day, ever, not even when you’ve had a good night’s sleep and didn’t have a Netflix marathon the night before (or overindulged 🍻), it’s probably, PROBABLY, worth your while to start looking for something else. 🤷♀️
There is no possibility of growth anymore
Being a developer means being in constant growth: new programming languages, new frameworks, new challenges and technologies… But hey, although we are promised it in each and every job offer we see, that growth may end at some point.
Many positions have a limited career path, and although at the beginning of every job there is usually a lot to learn, it is possible that after a few months you will notice a stagnation: you master the processes, you start to repeat them, and new challenges do not appear. 💩
If this is the case, here is another clear indicator of change, sorry not sorry.
The atmosphere in the team and with the bosses is not good
Human value, in every job, is essential. Being surrounded by cool mates (the kind that will invite you to a coffee or solve an epic problem) will help you to grow and not lose interest 🙂 But if your “superiors” don’t comply with your expectations, you’ll be able to do the same.
But if your “superiors” don’t do their job, put you under too much pressure, or are impertinent to you, it may be time to think about looking for something else. The same applies if your colleagues don’t wish them on anyone. 😅
Timetables go beyond what you’ve been told
Many jobs in the tech sector are – increasingly – target-driven. You have to deliver something by a certain date and from then on you have to manage your time. But what happens when, every day, you spend many more hours than your allotted time in front of the computer because you don’t make it? Well, it’s no fun.
What happens when you were told it was going to be a quiet job, but you find yourself working like crazy at the end of the night? Even less so.
Surely you can find something better for yourself, something that allows you to have a life outside of work, for example.
