8 tips to stay alert and focused when writing code

Writing code is the key to the developer’s job. And, as we all know, it requires concentration and isolation to do it well.

This is a world full of distractions, and with remote work even more so. So let’s go over eight types to keep your focus and optimize yourself like never before! 🚀 .

Think of it this way: the more focus you put in, the less time you’ll waste and the faster you’ll finish your tasks.

Discover your optimal time

Remote work and the freedom of schedules in the tech sector allow one to work at the time of greatest performance. But what is your optimal time? ⌚

If the best clear time of day for you is the morning, clear it out and dedicate it to working on your code. Don’t get to work if you’re too tired, or on a full stomach, because you’ll be slower and it will become an ordeal.

Take breaks every hour

There’s no point in going crazy and doing five hours at a stretch. Taking a break every hour for about ten minutes will help you to be productive and recharge your strength and enthusiasm to continue.

It’s the same as with tasks: splitting time and interspersing breaks will help you work better and finish faster.

You can use, for example, the Pomodoro technique:

  • 25 minutes of hard work 💪.
  • Five-minute breaks.
  • Every three rounds, rest 30 minutes.

Block distractions

Here it’s clear: no distractions. Block the mobile, computer apps and focus on development.
Little things like putting your phone on silent or clearing your desk table of objects can help you concentrate.

Create a to-do list

If you are tidy, you work better and more effectively. How many times have we made a parent mess because we didn’t organize ourselves well?

So a good tip is: before your coding session, make a list of what you’re going to do. Make a visual outline of what you want to accomplish. And then get to it. You’ll find that it works much better.

Divide your session into small tasks and accomplishments

One way to stay focused is to gamify the work a bit. If we break what we have to do into sub-tasks, and think of them as accomplishments, we can go one at a time.’🥇

If we propose a task that is too broad and ambitious, the brain itself will tell us: “I can’t do this, I want to do something else”. But if that same task is broken down into subtasks, the whole thing changes at once!

The important role of music

Not all types of music, but music in general. Listening to music in the background while you concentrate on the task can make you concentrate even more on it. There are several types of music, always without lyrics, that will help you:

  • Classical music
  • Nature sounds
  • Movie music
  • Video game music
  • Beats or drums

Don’t forget your motivations

Knowing why you are doing what you are doing and what you will get out of it can be a boost to your concentration.
And don’t forget to also remind yourself why you decided to do developer, what you like about it. Those kinds of thoughts will drive your work!

Food is important

We always share this with the team and with the candis: food is everything in a person’s life. Even for improving concentration. Avoiding processed foods, fats and sugars will have an impact on your brain.

You will concentrate better, you will have less ups and downs… Remember: healthy and balanced diet.

And with this assortment of tips, you’re sure to find it easier to concentrate.
